The Long Island Spring Cleaning Checklist (Inside and Out)

Spring cleaning here is not just dusting. It is undoing five months of a sealed house plus road salt and the first pollen wave.

April 8, 2026 · 7 min read

A Long Island winter leaves specific residue: road salt tracked through entryways, dust circulated by five months of forced-air heat, and window tracks full of grit. Then April arrives with pollen. Sequence matters — work inside out and top down, and do exteriors before you open the windows.

Start with the systems

  • Replace HVAC filters, then clean every supply and return vent cover
  • Vacuum accessible duct openings
  • Clean ceiling fan blades and reverse the direction for summer
  • Test and vacuum smoke and CO detectors
  • Clean dryer vent and lint pathway

Windows and entries

  • Vacuum then wash window tracks — this is where winter grit accumulates most
  • Clean interior and exterior glass
  • Wash or replace entry mats; deep clean the entryway floor for salt residue
  • Wipe down storm doors, thresholds, and door hardware
  • Launder or vacuum window treatments

Room by room

  • Kitchen: degrease cabinet fronts and range hood, clean oven and refrigerator interiors, pull appliances and clean behind them
  • Bathrooms: scrub grout, re-caulk anything discolored, clean exhaust fans, descale showerheads
  • Bedrooms: rotate mattresses, wash pillows and mattress protectors, vacuum under beds, clear closet floors
  • Living areas: vacuum upholstery including under cushions, dust electronics and baseboards, clean behind furniture
  • Basement and garage: sweep, check for moisture signs, and clear anything storing damp

Exterior — the Long Island priorities

  • Soft wash siding to remove winter algae and salt film, especially on north-facing walls
  • Power wash walkways, driveway, and patio
  • Clean gutters and confirm downspouts discharge away from the foundation
  • Wash exterior windows and screens before pollen peaks
  • Clean and inspect deck; re-seal if water no longer beads
  • Clean outdoor furniture and grill

Timing it right

Late March through mid-April is the window. Exteriors ideally happen before tree pollen peaks in May; if you miss that, plan a second quick rinse in June. Interior work is best done before the house gets opened up for the season, so you are not cleaning pollen that just blew in.

If the full list is unrealistic in one weekend — it usually is — prioritize HVAC and vents, window tracks, entryway salt, and exterior soft washing. Those four deliver the biggest measurable change in how the house feels.
