A Long Island winter is not primarily a cold problem. It is a moisture and wind problem — freeze-thaw cycling that widens every crack, salt in the air on both shores, and nor'easters that shred anything not properly secured.
Shrink wrap vs. tarps vs. fitted covers
A tarp flaps. Flapping abrades the finish underneath and eventually tears the tarp itself, after which it holds water instead of shedding it. Fitted covers are better but rarely seal at the bottom, so wind-driven rain and snow still get under them.
Shrink wrap is heat-sealed to the frame, so there is no flapping and no gap. Properly installed, it sheds snow load and keeps salt spray off entirely. Its one weakness is condensation, which is why venting is not an optional add-on.
What is worth wrapping
- Boats stored outdoors — the standard case, and the one where the cost difference pays for itself in a single season
- Patio and outdoor furniture that will not fit in a garage
- Construction materials staged on an active site
- Machinery and palletized equipment
- Trailers, jet skis, and seasonal recreational equipment
Venting is the whole game
Sealed wrap with no vents traps moisture that evaporates off the covered item, and that moisture becomes mildew by February. A correct installation includes vents high on the structure and, on larger items, a zippered access door so you can inspect without cutting the wrap.
Exterior winterizing beyond wrapping
- Power wash walkways and driveways before the first freeze — organic debris left in place stains through winter and holds moisture in concrete
- Clear gutters completely; ice dams start with a blocked downspout
- Drain and shut off exterior spigots and irrigation
- Wash and cover or store outdoor furniture cushions
- Soft wash siding in fall so algae does not overwinter and spread
- Seal driveway cracks before water gets in and freezes
Timing
October is the window on Long Island. Shrink wrap installation needs dry conditions and above-freezing temperatures to seal properly, and exterior washing needs the same. Waiting until the first cold snap means competing with everyone else who waited, and by then the weather stops cooperating.
Plan removal at the same time you book installation. Spring wrap removal and disposal is faster and cheaper scheduled in advance than arranged in a rush the week you want the boat in the water.
